"How Do I Love Thee"

Introduction

The marriage preparation and support program at St. Joseph Church is designed to encourage a sense of welcome and belonging to engaged couples preparing for marriage in our parish. It is also designed to introduce engaged couples to major aspects of married life in the Church. Included with instruction and discussion each engaged couple will be paired up with a "Mentor Couple" to aid in the marriage preparation process.

Mentor Couples receive formation and training from Deacon Neil B. Richter at St. Joseph Church. Mentor couples support engaged couples and share their insights on married life in the context of a Roman Catholic faith commitment.

Structure

The structure of the program is designed in a way that recognizes the limitations of couples as regards work and home responsibilities and schedules. The program consists of three training sessions with Deacon Neil Richter for Mentor Couples. Upon completion these couples are formally commissioned by the pastor, Fr. Joseph DiSciacca to serve as Mentor Couples, and receive a certificate testifying to their role as Mentor Couples for St. Joseph Church, Bristol, Ct.

The Mentor Couples will be required to meet with the engaged couples three times. The first time will consist of meeting with all the engaged and Mentor Couples in an evening session. Then each Mentor Couple will be paired up with an engaged couple and will be required to meet two more times in the home of the Mentor Couple.

The Goal of the Program

The role of the Mentor Couple is to provide support, and to be a visible presence of the love of God in the St. Joseph community to the engaged couples preparing for marriage.

At St. Joseph Church we believe that the care, acquired wisdom, faith and love of the mentor couple will be an extraordinary gift of the Lord to engaged couples, and the life of the parish.

The final goal is to have fun and to share the joy of married life with the parish family.
