St. Joseph Home & School Association

October 2007 Minutes

     A general meeting of the St. Joseph Home & School Association was held Monday, October 1, 2007 in the Guild Hall. Principal Mark Monnerat called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. with a prayer. Mr. Monnerat asked that parents work with their children to help the children become more focused. There are some children not doing their homework. Please encourage your children to do their homework. The following announcements were made:

  • The teachers are working on electronic report cards. The diocese has mandated that all parochial school have electronic report cards by 2008.
  • The School Board is forming several subcommittees. If interested in participating, contact Mr. Monnerat or Robin Chiasson.
  • THANK YOU to everyone who signed up to work BINGO. The new cycle begins 10/3and runs for a year. There is still a need for a few more workers and for more people to attend and play. If interested in working, contact Mr. Monnerat. BINGO workers work once a month.
  • Please be aware of the “No Parking” signs in front of the school on Center Street. The police will begin to ticket offenders. Also, the owner of the house across the street from the school asks that you please try to stay off his grass.
  • 2nd grade students will begin taking the IOWA tests on 10/18. If you are a 2nd grade parent, please encourage your child to do their best. This is a pilot program.
  • The Paulette Theriault Scholarship Dance will be held 10/12/07 at Marinelli’s from 7-11 p.m. Try to come out for a fun night to support the school. Tickets are $25 per person and are available at the school.
  • Octoberfest will be held 10/5/07. There will be activities and games for the kids. Dismissal will be at 12:30. There will be a raffle with prizes, and tickets will be sold all week in school. The students will pray the rosary in church before Octoberfest.
  • Miss Stellon has announced that there will be aftercare 10/5 after school. Please send in lunches, drinks, and snacks for aftercare on half days. There will be no aftercare on days with early dismissal due to inclement weather or on teacher conference days. The aftercare program can use old games, dolls, blocks, etc. Miss Stellon is also running the Rainbows program to help children who may be having a hard time due to a loss of a family member, divorce, etc. If interested, contact Miss Stellon.
  • Parents should have received a note from Mrs. Nappi about the new communications envelopes. There will be a communications envelope with notices, etc that will go home on Tuesdays and needs to be returned by Friday. All groups sending out notices need to have their noticed in by Monday. Volunteers to help stuff the envelopes are needed. If interested, contact Mrs. Nappi.
  • If you have not done so, please sign the form in the back of the St. Joseph School Handbook and send it in.
  • October 19 will be picture day. Students may wear casual dress.
  • Class pictures will be taken 10/24. Students must be in uniform.
  • FREE DRESS for children of parents who attended tonight’s meeting will be 10/3. There is free dress 10/5 for Octoberfest.
  • There is no school 10/8.
  • Danielle George will be running the Book Fair. The Book Fair will kick off Sunday 11/4 and run through 11/9. If you are able to help out, please contact Danielle George or Mr. Monnerat.
  • There will not be a Home & School meeting 11/5 due to a mass of remembrance. The next Home & School meeting will be in December.
  • October 15 is the last day to wear uniform shorts. Cargo shorts are not acceptable as boys’ uniform shorts. Boys need belts with their pants. Sneakers cannot be worn with the long uniform pants.

     Fr. Joe announced that the Feast of St. Francis is on 10/4. On Sat. 10/6 there will be a blessing of pets in the schoolyard. Fr. Joe and Fr. Jose will be meeting with the students in the near future to speak about the sacrament of Reconciliation and will celebrate Reconciliation with the students.

     Fr. Joe also reported that Mr. Monnerat has been awarded the Distinguished Principal Award for the Archdiocese of Hartford. Because of this, Mr. Monnerat has now been nominated for the National Award for Distinguished Catholic School Principals.

     Pete Roberge then thanked Meg Staubley for spearheading the Float Committee, and thanked everyone who worked on the float for the Mum Parade. He reminded everyone about the upcoming auction, and announced that the Auction Committee is still looking for volunteers for clean up, decorating, bartending, etc. If interested, contact Laura Bouchard. The Auction Ad Book still has room for ads. Contact Laura if interested. The auction will be 11/17. Please try to attend. DUGOUT Dollars will be sold in advance. They can be purchased through SCRIP and you will receive scrip points for them. They can be used for anything at the auction.

     The Golf Tournament will be 5/22/08 at Chippannee.

     The Home & School Committee is looking for volunteers to co-ordinate McEducator’s Night with McDonald’s. If interested, contact Pete Roberge or Tom Rokosa.

     Pete reported that the wrapping paper sale made approximately $8600.

     Mr. Monnerat reminded people to send in their Box Tops for Education and Labels for Education.

     There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:45 p.m.
